Port Orford, Oregon

After our trip to Crater Lake National Park, we returned to the southern Oregon coast.  It is like a magnet, drawing us back.  We landed in Port Orford Monday evening and began looking for a campsite.  There were several rv camps in town.  They all looked like parking lots.  That's not how we roll.  We wandered into Humbug Mountain State Park, several miles south of town, and took a primitive campsite for three nights.  Our plan was to spend a few days parked along Hwy 101 and soak in the ocean views.  We did that, and still weren't ready to leave, so we moved over into a quiet electric/water site for another three days.  That would take us through the weekend (sometimes a tricky time to find vacant sites).  We had time to do laundry, grocery shop, and try out the local fish and chips shop.

Note:  most of these pictures are posted self-indulgently for us to remember our time here.  It has been a wonderful, restful break.

Why wouldn't a Norwegian patronize this shop?

We discovered the Port Orford port/wharf.  It is a small, working wharf with mostly local fishermen and local crabbers.  We have hung out on the end of the wharf for three days.  We'll be sad to leave.  Here is why.

Fishing vessels lined up at the wharf.  There are no boats left in the water.

Here comes another lone fisherman.

His boat is winched up, but stops to let him off. He gets his trailer and returns.

He hand-steers his boat into the right position.

While still attached to the huge winch, he secures his boat.

He unloads his catch for today...

... has a chat with the winch operator...

... and drives his boat away until tomorrow when he starts all over again.

More slices of our day in this place we loved to hang out.

My travel project getting some Port Orford knitted into it

A little fuzzy, but a common sight

Moorings look like crosses - I think they are secret blessings for the fishermen.

Can you find the guy fishing here?  He was all over the rocks looking for the sweet spot.

Our favorite view.  We'd love to live in that house on the top of the cliff.

Good-bye, Port Orford, Oregon.  Thank you for the beautiful, serene, unbelievably delightful memories.
