we don't get tired of beautiful forests |

Our original thought was to take a side trip to Lassen Volcanic National Park. It meant driving inland and back to the coast again, and it wasn't really on our radar, but we had some time to kill. For the first time in the trip, we'd made a reservation (a treat to celebrate our 15th anniversary), and had to work around that schedule. More about that later.
We drove into the Trinity Alps. It was gorgeous. After a full day of more twisty-windy-pull-off-for-the-faster-vehicles driving, we were only about a third of the way there.

we drove in and out of clouds |
Once again we found campgrounds closed for the winter along the way. We did find a tiny little spot - 8 quiet sites - and spent the night by the river. We decided to return to the coast, saving loads of time, $6-ish gas, and wear and tear.
