Yellowstone National Park is such a well-known landmark and point of pride for our nation. It is widely visited, very busy, and large. Really, really large. As we traveled through the park, we knew we could spend a week and never see all it has to give. We deliberately chose to pass by some of the more famous aspects of the park due to crowds, timing, and sometimes roads that prohibited RV's - even our little turtle van.
We explored the northern half of the park the first day, then the southern half the second day. Our early morning experiences were far superior to those later in the day as the crowds increased. We're just like that. We are all getting really good at this early morning stuff.

The thing that impressed us this trip through Yellowstone was the enormous geographic diversity we found within the park. It just kept changing. We'd turn a bend in the road and "WHOA! Look at that!" All of a sudden there would be rocks. Or mountains. Or vast prairies. Or an enormous lake. Or huge puffs of steam and hot water coming out of the ground.
My very favorite experience this trip was our morning visit to the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. So many artists have photographed and painted this view. It brought tears to my eyes to be standing in the same spot.

This spot. Oh my goodness. |
As we left the area to travel north and west, our route took us through the southwest quadrant of Yellowstone one more time. We'd traveled this twice already, and knew we were on a mission to move on. We didn't expect to see anything new or different. Yellowstone had a parting gift for us. A few buffalo were grazing by the side of the road. Right there. We're not the stop-traffic-to look-at-the-animals kind of visitors, so as we slowly and carefully drove past, we were treated to the huffs and puffs of the buffalo. Right there. A really nice gift. Thank you, YNP.
